The tax entry, explained
IGST means Integrated Goods and Services Tax. An entry such as “IGST-VPS RATE 18.0” records tax associated with a taxable credit-card charge. To understand it, find the interest or fee that generated it.
The original HDFC statement examples below use the VPS label. The official sources linked here do not define “VPS”, so the label alone should not be used to identify a particular loan or fee.
What can it relate to?
- Credit-card EMI interest or other taxable card interest.
- A processing, annual, joining or late-payment fee.
- A taxable card service charge, such as a foreign-currency markup.
HDFC’s terms specify 18% GST on applicable fees and interest. This calculation applies to the taxable charge, not automatically to your entire EMI, outstanding balance or purchase price. HDFC card terms ↗
IGST or CGST + SGST?
For an interstate supply, tax may appear as IGST. For an intrastate supply, it may be split into CGST and SGST/UTGST. At an overall rate of 18%, the split is normally 9% + 9%—not IGST plus another 18%. The bank’s place of supply rules and customer records determine the treatment. CBIC banking FAQs ↗

Check the tax amount
Use the interest or fee amount before tax. If you only have the GST entry, choose “Find the underlying charge”.
₹1,750.00 × 18% = ₹315.00
- Taxable charge
- ₹1,750.00
- GST
- ₹315.00
- Charge + GST
- ₹2,065.00
This is a calculation, not confirmation that a bank entry is correct. Rounding or multiple grouped charges can affect the match.
Match the entry to your statement
- Note the amount and date.
Look for an interest or fee entry around the tax posting date. Also check the previous statement: HDFC’s terms say GST on some statement-date charges appears in the following month. HDFC GST terms ↗
- Check active EMI schedules.
Use the interest component for the relevant instalment, not the whole EMI. If more than one EMI is active, check each schedule.
- Compare the arithmetic.
At 18%, ₹315 GST corresponds to about ₹1,750 of taxable charges. The reverse calculator helps identify a possible match; it cannot tell you which transaction generated it.
- Ask the bank if it still doesn’t match.
Request the underlying fee or interest entry and its tax breakdown. An unfamiliar or duplicate amount should be checked rather than assumed correct just because it says IGST.
Common questions
Is IGST VPS another bank fee?
It is a tax entry. The underlying taxable fee or interest is a separate charge; check that entry to understand why the tax was posted.
Is tax calculated on my whole EMI?
For the interest calculation, use only the taxable interest component. Principal repayment is not the base. A separate processing fee can have its own GST.
Why is there GST on a no-cost EMI?
A merchant discount may offset interest without covering the tax on interest or a processing fee. Check the specific offer and bank repayment schedule.
Why is there a charge when I made no new purchase?
An existing EMI, card fee or interest posting can still generate tax. Some tax entries can also be posted in a later statement.
Does VPS have a confirmed expansion?
The official sources reviewed for this page do not explain the VPS abbreviation. Ask HDFC to identify the underlying entry rather than relying on an assumed expansion.
Will the calculator tell me whether I owe this amount?
No. It checks arithmetic using the amount and rate you enter. Your statement, tax invoice and bank’s explanation establish what the entry relates to.
